Patiala – our most popular volunteering destination, is a medium sized city in the Punjab state of India, formerly one of the erstwhile princely districts of India. It is located 255 Kms north of the National capital city of New Delhi. Patiala is famous for its turban (traditional headgear), paranda (tasselled tag for braiding hair), peg (Patiala Peg – a double or large peg of whiskey), Phulkari ( a traditional embroidery), Jutti (traditional Punjabi footwear) and “patialashahi” salwaar(Pants). Patiala is a shopper’s paradise and is a hub of Wedding shopping. Patiala is surrounded my lush green agriculture farms.
Patiala is not a Tourist Hot spot and hence you would not find many westerns here. Unlike most tourist paces where tourism is the main source of Income, Patiala still strives on is Agriculture based economy. The city still holds onto the cultural traditions and has not molded itself to cater to the International tourist as some of the tourist Cities have. This makes Patiala the best place to experience the Indian culture and traditions in its most raw form.

Accommodation in Patiala is Home stay, as it gives the volunteers a chance to experience the local culture, traditions and Indian way of life. Home cooked delicious India food is a bonus. Home stays are very basic unlike what volunteers are used to and volunteers generally share room/bathroom with fellow volunteers. Host families are carefully selected by us on the basis of their ability to handle and host international volunteers but because of the cultural difference settling in needs some adjustments. It is a wonderful experience for anyone who really wishes to enjoy and explore India on a deeper level than the general tourist.
Our program in Patiala includes Local sightseeing, orientation to the life, greetings and customs to help volunteers settle in. We have also included into our program 4 – 5 times a week Yoga, dance and Language lessons. These are specially included to give our volunteers a chance learn and experience the rich culture of India. Yoga classes are beginner level. Language taught is Punjabi/Hindi with traditional Punjabi dance called Bhangra. Volunteers also have a chance to learn Indian cooking at the Home stay. Apart from our program inclusive activities Volunteers are encouraged to extract and learn as much as they while they are staying in Patiala.
